This is not just
kids stuff.
If you're an adult
visiting the orthodontist to explore options to correct your
bite, don't be surprised when you see your contemporaries
sitting in the reception area with you. The fact is, adult
patients comprise a significant percentage of Dr. Malerman's
practice.
Why do they do
it? Naturally, everybody wants a beautiful smile. But there
are other reasons:
- Straighter teeth
are easier to clean. Cleaner teeth lead to healthier teeth and
gums.
- Various types of
facial joint pain, including tempromandibular joint, or TMJ,
plagues many adults. Correcting the adult's bad bite, or "malocclusion,"
helps alleviate or eliminate these painful symptoms.
- In recent years,
researchers have found a connection between the plaque found
on the teeth and the plaque around the heart connected with
heart disease. Straighter teeth are teeth that are easier to
clean, meaning that hte patient can more easily brush that harmful
plaque away.
Some adults need to work
with their whole dental team their general dentist, their
orthodontist, and their oral surgeon, to correct their misaligned
smile. And with the fully developed adult jaw, orthodontic treatment
can take longer than that for children. Dr. Malerman can discuss
all of this with you should you decide to pursue treatment for your
malocclusion.
But the results are
really worth it. And adults who are self-consicous about sporting
the same tin grin their teenagers have can talk to Dr. Malerman
about options in "invisible" braces to straighten their smile,
without the metallic glare.
